Check registered trademarks with the U.S. Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS -- Often, people register domain names they later find out are trademark names belonging to someone else. When this happens, the usual result is the domain name holder is forced to transfer the domain to the holder of the trademark or else face legal repercussions. Not only will the registrant of the domain lose title to the name, but the registrant will also lose the registration fee he or she paid to register the name. To check a name to see if it's a registered tradmark, go to http://www.uspto.gov/web/menu/search.html. From there, click on "New User Form Search (Basic) and enter a name in the "Search Term" field box. Next, click on "Submit Query".

Hosting

Check out http://parcom.net. They offer shared hosting on either Windows or Linux for about $4 per month. (I strongly recommend Windows.) They also offer a great rate of about $60 per month for a dedicated server that handle probably 100 domains -- that's the same as the cost of hosting 3 domains at Interland. This may be in my future if I feel confident in managing the server myself or paying them to do it. Their approach to tech support is thin: chat or e-mail only. No phone calls accepted. They'll sell you management of a dedicated server. I don't know the rate.  Maury King's http://ipaintglass.com is hosted there as of 11/1/2002.  (Parcom.net's contacts page, and partners list)

The Top-Rated Hosting Companies

See the 25 top-rated domain hosting companies at http://www.hostindex.com/voteresults.shtm.

Interland.net is rated #9. I'm considering changing to:

1. WebHosting.com <http://www.webhosting.com> -- WebHosting.com has clearly marked themselves as a leader in web hosting products. Their hosting packages offer a powerful combination of performance, affordability, and 24 hr. technical support.

2. Verio <http://home.verio.net/services/webhosting.cfm> -- Verio is among the web's largest hosting providers and helps businesses to realize Internet results. They offer an immense range of product offerings and a leading network infrastructure.

3. HostPro <http://www.hostpro.com> -- HostPro frequently ranks among the world's best web hosts. A division of Micron, HostPro offers affordable hosting options from $19.95/month. New hosting data centers build onto their top-notch operations.

Hotbot search for hosting companies

What I'll be looking for is:
  1. quality of e-mail server software that supports access through the Web
  2. accessibility of 24x7 technical support
  3. Web-based domain administration (e.g., add/change users, change permissions, set up ODBC data sources, cycle FP Server Extensions, enable/disable anonymous FTP)
  4. special features to support resellers with multiple domains (transaction lists, renewal dates, etc.)
  5. E-commerce options
  6. traffic analysis (such as WebTrends)
  7. support for generating e-mails from a Active Server Page (ASP)
  8. price per domain per month
  9. DNS support for http://danwebb.com as well as http://www.danwebb.com
  10. an assigned sales rep.
  11. effective method of communicating with the Billing Department
  12. features compared with Interland's
  13. cost of having a dedicated server to support all the domains I host as a reseller
  14. (If you have features or services that are most important to you that aren't on this list, please let me know.)
To move to a new hosting company, this is the process I envision:
  1. Start a new domain (e.g., SoCalFMG.com, mediservrx.com or hanawebb.com), copy the content from danwebb.com to the new domain, and test the heck out of it.
  2. If I like my experience after a month, I'll start moving domains over to the new host as their renewal dates come up or if they want to move earlier to get the advantages of the new hosting environment earlier.
  3. When I have enough domains moved to the new hosting company to justify a dedicated server, I'll make that leap at my own expense.
